GEN S 300 - Interdisciplinary Process

Units: 3 

Grading Method: CNC - Letter (Cr/NC OK)

Contextualization of interdisciplinary theory and the concept of disciplinary perspective. Integration of phenomena, data, assumptions, epistemology, theories, and methods for interdisciplinary research. Implementation of a structured research process to investigate an interdisciplinary problem. 

GEN S 340 - Confronting HIV/AIDS

Units: 3 

Grading Method: LCR: Letter Grade with Cr/NC available. The grading default for the class will be letter grade, but students can opt to take it for Cr/NC

Prerequisite(s): Completion of the General Education requirement in Foundations of Learning II.A. Natural Sciences and Quantitative Reasoning.

Examines the HIV/AIDS epidemic from historical, epidemiological, biological, medical, psychological, political, legal, and ethical perspectives.

GEN S 350 - Interdisciplinary Topics

Units: 1-4

GEN S 400 - Professional Experience and Community Service

Units: 1-3 

Grading Method: CNC: Credit/No Credit

Prerequisite(s): Upper division standing, minimum grade point average of 2.0, concurrent participation in professional or community service activity and approval of course contract.

Academic work designed with faculty approval to complement concurrent paid or unpaid professional or community service experience.

Maximum Credits: 6
Note: Information and course forms available in Division of Academic Engagement and Student Achievement, AD-101. Applications must be submitted to the division prior to the end of the first week of classes. May be used to satisfy major or minor requirements only upon written approval of department chair. No combination of GEN S 200 and 400 in excess of six units may be counted for credit toward a bachelor’s degree.

GEN S 420 - Disability and Society

Units: 3 GE

Grading Method: LCR: Letter Grade with Cr/NC available. The grading default for the class will be letter grade, but students can opt to take it for Cr/NC

Prerequisite(s): Upper division standing.

Explores the range of the disability experience; examines society’s attitudes toward individuals and the interrelationship between societal institutions and the perception of people with disabilities. Contemporary issues with particular emphasis on disability culture, ableism, and inclusion.

GEN S 450 - Life and Culture Semester Abroad

Units: 3 GE

Grading Method: LCR: Letter Grade with Cr/NC available. The grading default for the class will be letter grade, but students can opt to take it for Cr/NC

Prerequisite(s): Upper division standing.

Life and culture of a foreign country through an approved semester abroad program sponsored by an academic department or program at SDSU. Requires lecture attendance, excursions and site visits, examinations and written reports.

GEN S 455 - Social and/or Behavioral Science Study Abroad

Units: 3 Explorations - Social and Behavioral Sciences [CSU D Upper Division]

Grading Method: LCR: Letter Grade with Cr/NC available. The grading default for the class will be letter grade, but students can opt to take it for Cr/NC

Prerequisite(s): Upper division standing.

Social and/or behavioral science-based exploration of/in a foreign country through an approved study abroad program or equivalent experience. Requires lecture attendance, site visits, examinations and written reports. May also include group projects and relevant disciplinary methodological training. 

Note: See Class Schedule for geographic location. May not be used to complete upper-division General Education Social and Behavioral Sciences requirement if student has used GEN S 450 to fulfill their upper-division Humanities General Education requirement.

GEN S 480 - Engaged Citizenship and Social Responsibility

Units: 3 GE

Grading Method: LCR: Letter Grade with Cr/NC available. The grading default for the class will be letter grade, but students can opt to take it for Cr/NC

Prerequisite(s): GEN S 280, upper division standing, and minimum grade point average of 2.0.

Fieldwork in multidisciplinary analyses of civic citizenship and social responsibility through participatory action research and inquiry driven service in pluralistic communities. Service paradigms for engaged citizenship. Students will be required to complete nine hours of supervised fieldwork per week and to attend weekly meetings with instructor.

Maximum Credits: 3

GEN S 490 - Undergraduate Research

Units: 1-3 

Grading Method: LCR: Letter Grade with Cr/NC available. The grading default for the class will be letter grade, but students can opt to take it for Cr/NC

Prerequisite(s): Upper division standing.

Research and creative activities to include preparation for qualitative and quantitative empirical research projects. Identify problem, formulate research question, design small-scale investigation, collect and analyze data, present findings, and may include creative and performing arts projects.

May be repeated with new content.
