Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When should I hear about my submitted application?

A: We are currently accepting applications on a rolling basis. You should hear within a few weeks of submission. We will keep the website updated with any changes.

Q: What if I can’t attend part of the beginning-of-semester training for some reason?

A: The beginning of semester SI Training is absolutely mandatory. New SI Leaders are required to attend both days of the training, no exceptions. If you are not able to attend, you can not be an SI Leader for this semester.

Q: How is SI different from tutoring?

A: SI focuses on peer-led learning. The job of the SI Leader is to plan and facilitate activities that nurture collaboration and teamwork among students. We avoid re-lecturing or handing the students the answer.

Q: Which disciplines are currently hiring?

A: Check the SI Application (Google Form) for the most current list of disciplines looking for a new SI Leader.

Q: How many students attend each session?

A: Because SI Sessions are voluntary for students, there is no consistent attendance in sessions. Sessions may get anywhere between 1 to 10 students throughout the semester, but that number increases drastically before exams.

Q: If I have a class conflict with the lecture, can I still be an SI Leader?

A: Unfortunately, you cannot be an SI Leader without attending the lecture. SI Leaders are required to attend the lectures in person for the course they are leading. If the lectures are MWF, the leaders are permitted to watch one online and attend the other two in person. This serves as a refresher for course content, and the professors may change from semester to semester. In order to stay consistent with the SI Model, lecture attendance is essential. Make sure you check the University Schedule.

Q: Do I have to be officially enrolled in the course?

A: SI Leaders are not officially enrolled in the course. They attend lecture and are added to Canvas, but are not actually taking the credits. SI Leaders are also required to take exams for the course, but the grades they recieve are not reflected in their own GPA.

Q: Can I apply if I am an international student?

A: Short answer, yes! The hiring process is a little more complicated, but we have had several international students work with SI. The start date to work may be delayed as a result of these complications.
